Climate change has created a unique condition perfect for Glenmaggie Wines to expand its operation. They are putting 1000 new vines in the ground this month, to compliment the 9-acre (20y/o vines) already planted. Tony Dawkins is pictured through the vines with Scruffy. Picture: Andy Rogers
While cabernet sauvignon Malaysia are being pulled out by their neighbours, Tony Dawkins and Glenmaggie winemakers Fleur are putting them.
“Most of Gippsland has problem but we do’t, we've got a website that is very popular,” Fleur says. It ’s the same type of climate they should make Hermitage wine that is French.
Climate change and an ever present “rain shadow” have helped create the best conditions for Fleur and Tony to perfect their grapes.
“Usually talking, we’re with less rain than surrounding regions, in an extremely dry area in Gippsland,” Tony says.
Tony did his homework regarding how many sunshine hours when he began he worked out which varieties he could ripen, and ’d need to ripen his grapes.
